“The places we remember change the way we think about place.”
Uptown began with a desire to understand why certain places become unforgettable.
The hotel where every detail feels considered. The neighborhood you never want to leave. The restaurant worth traveling for. The places where people gather naturally—and where there always seems to be a reason to stay a little longer.
Not simply how they look. How they make us feel.
We traveled. We studied. We experienced remarkable cities, neighborhoods, resorts, restaurants and gathering places. We looked beyond architecture to understand how the best places actually work—how people arrive, where they gather, what makes them linger and why they want to return.
The goal was never to recreate another place in Tucson.
A place with history
Long before Uptown, this site was home to Foothills Mall, originally developed by Bourn Companies and a familiar part of Tucson’s retail landscape for decades. The property became part of the everyday life of the city—and part of Bourn’s own history in Tucson.
New opportunity
When Bourn reacquired the property in 2016, the opportunity wasn’t to recreate Foothills Mall or simply build another shopping destination. It was to reconsider what this important site could become for the next generation of Tucson.
The question
That question changed the way we approached the site. Instead of beginning with buildings or a traditional development model, we began by looking at the places people choose to return to again and again—and asking what makes them work.
The discovery
The research into exceptional places revealed something important: the most compelling destinations aren’t defined by a single building, restaurant, hotel or amenity. They are defined by how everything comes together.
Buildings and architecture matter. So do streets and landscape. Food and hospitality. Culture and programming. Service and people. And the transitions and unexpected moments in between.
Uptown
From that thinking came the idea for Uptown: a connected destination bringing together the energy and authenticity of urban life, the discovery and social experience of a great lifestyle destination, and the hospitality, wellness and ease of a resort—all shaped for Tucson.
Energy. Access. Diversity. Convenience. Walkability. Spontaneity. Authenticity.
Gathering. Discovery. Dining. Entertainment. Culture. Connection.
Hospitality. Service. Beauty. Wellness. Ease. Attention to detail.
Uptown is more than a collection of buildings and experiences. Residences, hospitality, dining, wellness, entertainment, work and public spaces are being planned as one connected destination—each distinct, but designed to strengthen everything around it.
The streets, walkways, gardens and gathering places between them are just as intentional, creating a place that moves naturally from one experience to the next.
This is the vision for Uptown: not simply a place with many things to do, but a place where everything belongs together.
Built for Tucson. With an ambition that reaches far beyond it.
